Suivre vs Poursuivre: Follow a Course or Continue It?
Choose suivre or poursuivre when following instructions, taking a course, tracking progress, or continuing an activity. Includes a worked French update.
A student takes a photography course, keeps up with a demonstration, and later decides to continue studying. English may use “follow” or “continue” across these descriptions, but French connects each verb to particular objects. Knowing the object helps you avoid turning a simple progress update into a sentence about chasing someone.
Quick answer
Suivre can mean following a person, obeying instructions, taking a course, or keeping track of something. Poursuivre often means continuing an activity or pursuing a goal; with a person, it can mean chasing them. The verbs are related but not freely interchangeable. Choose the object and intended action together, especially when describing study, work, or movement.

Let the object identify the action
Je suis un cours de photographie (I am taking a photography course) describes participation in instruction. Je poursuis ma formation (I am continuing my training) describes its continuation. The second sentence normally assumes that the training has already begun, while the first simply identifies what you are taking.
| Object and purpose | Natural example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| A person ahead | Nous suivons le guide. | We follow the guide. |
| Instructions | Elle suit les consignes. | She follows the instructions. |
| A class or course | Il suit un cours du soir. | He takes an evening class. |
| An activity already underway | Nous poursuivons le travail. | We continue the work. |
| A stated goal | Elle poursuit un objectif précis. | She pursues a specific goal. |
The table shows useful combinations rather than every dictionary meaning. A noun can sometimes occur with both verbs, but the perspective changes. You need to decide whether the sentence concerns taking part, paying attention, carrying on, or aiming at an outcome.
Follow information, instructions, or progress
Je suis les explications, mais je ne vois pas encore comment appliquer la méthode (I follow the explanations, but I do not yet see how to apply the method) distinguishes understanding from practical use. Following an explanation does not automatically establish that you can perform the task independently.
Suivre les consignes can mean acting according to the instructions. Suivre l’évolution du projet means monitoring how the project develops. The first concerns behavior; the second concerns attention to progress. The wider context tells you whether someone is doing the work or observing it.
A manner phrase is not an object connector
Nous suivons de près les préparatifs (We are keeping a close eye on the preparations) contains de près, a phrase meaning closely. The preparations remain the direct object. Do not learn a false pattern such as suivre de quelque chose by separating the words at the wrong point.
The à and de guide explains why you should identify complete constructions. A preposition appearing near a verb is not necessarily a connector that the verb requires before its object.
Continue an activity with poursuivre
Après la pause, nous poursuivrons la discussion (After the break, we will continue the discussion) presents an existing activity carried forward. It does not necessarily mean starting from the beginning again. If the intention is to repeat everything, choose wording that says so explicitly.
Elle poursuit ses études (She is continuing her studies) is a common combination. It can describe maintaining an educational path beyond a current stage. The sentence does not by itself name the subject studied or prove that a qualification has been completed.
If you want an infinitive, continuer à is often a simpler construction: Nous continuons à travailler (We continue working). Do not attach an infinitive directly to poursuivre by copying the English structure “continue working.” A noun phrase such as poursuivre le travail expresses the continuation clearly.
Following a person differs from pursuing one
Le groupe suit le guide jusqu’au jardin (The group follows the guide to the garden) describes people going behind or with someone who leads. Le chien poursuit la balle (The dog chases the ball) describes pursuit, with a moving target the animal tries to reach.
With a person, poursuivre can similarly suggest chasing or persistent pursuit. It is therefore a poor automatic substitute for a neutral instruction to follow a guide. A change of verb can alter the whole scene even when the sentence remains grammatical.
The same caution applies metaphorically. Following someone’s reasoning means understanding how it develops, not chasing the person. A verb-and-object combination is often more useful to remember than a broad English label such as “follow.”
Worked task: report a learning project
Your fictional photography project has three facts: you attend a course, you monitor the progress of a shared album, and you will continue editing after a break. Write an update that separates those responsibilities and activities.
Je suis un cours de photographie le jeudi. Dans notre groupe, je suis aussi l’avancement de l’album commun. Après la pause, nous poursuivrons la sélection des images, puis nous préparerons les légendes. (I take a photography course on Thursdays. In our group, I also keep track of progress on the shared album. After the break, we will continue selecting the images, then prepare the captions.)
The first occurrence of suis identifies a course being taken. The second identifies monitoring. The future poursuivrons marks continuation of a selection already underway. Preparing the captions is placed afterward with puis, so the message does not imply that every activity happens simultaneously.
For the nouns and time expressions describing what comes next, see suite and its expressions. They can help organize the update, but a sequence marker does not replace choosing the right verb for the work itself.
Common mistakes and a memory tip
Do not assume that every je suis belongs to être. In je suis un cours, the object and context identify the verb suivre. Do not write je suis à un cours if you intend the direct-object construction; that wording introduces a different description of being at a class.
Avoid confusing continuing with stopping and restarting. The arrêter lesson covers ending an action. A later continuation can be described with additional context, but the word poursuivre alone does not supply the entire history of interruptions.
For a memory tip, pair “course, instructions, progress” with the relevant following or monitoring meanings, and “work, studies, discussion” with continuation. Then check for a person or moving target, where pursuit may give a very different interpretation.
Practice: choose the complete combination
- Translate “We follow the instructions.”
- Translate “She will continue her studies.”
- Explain why “I am following the guide” should not automatically use poursuivre.
Explained answers
For 1, Nous suivons les consignes (We follow the instructions) describes acting according to them. For 2, Elle poursuivra ses études (She will continue her studies) names an existing educational activity. For 3, Je suis le guide (I follow the guide) fits ordinary guided movement; je poursuis le guide can suggest chasing the guide. The direct object is unchanged, but the action is not.

Questions about this note
What does à suivre mean at the end of a story?
It means to be continued. It tells the reader that another part will follow, rather than asking them to follow a person.
What is un suivi in an ordinary project discussion?
It can mean follow-up or monitoring over time. The noun describes continued attention to a matter, not necessarily the act of continuing the work itself.
Does le suivant always mean a person walking behind me?
No. It often means the next one in an order or sequence. A ticket number, exercise, or item can be le suivant.
